
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has pledged its full support for President John Dramani Mahama’s call for transparency and accountability in the financial management of the Black Stars and other national teams.
The GFA made this commitment in response to President Mahama’s State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2025, where he emphasized that there must be no secrecy in how government funds are spent on sports.
Acknowledging the concerns raised by the President, the GFA reassured Ghanaians that it remains committed to financial transparency. The association clarified that:
- The first draft budget for national teams is always submitted to the Ministry of Sports before final approval.
- All payments related to the Black Stars are handled exclusively by the Ministry, not the GFA.
The GFA also welcomed President Mahama’s directive for the Ministry of Sports to engage with the public transparently regarding financial matters. The association pledged to work closely with the Ministry to ensure accountability and restore public trust in football administration.
During his address, President Mahama acknowledged the disappointment of the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for AFCON, but he expressed confidence in the team’s potential, pointing out that Ghana is currently joint top of its World Cup qualifying group.
In response, the GFA Executive Council has taken steps to strengthen the Management and Technical teams of the Black Stars, with the aim of improving performances in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in March and beyond.
The GFA’s financial transparency pledge comes at a time when the association has faced intense criticism over the poor performances of Ghana’s national teams, with many fans and stakeholders demanding reforms.
Beyond financial accountability, President Mahama has also promised to invest in sports infrastructure, committing to renovating stadiums and developing youth resource centers to nurture local talent.
The GFA expressed its enthusiasm for the President’s vision and pledged to work alongside the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to restore Ghana’s footballing reputation and ensure a brighter future for the Black Stars.
