SONA: You have few ministers but more presidential staffers – Afenyo-Markin points out to Mahama

The Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has told President John Dramani Mahama that his strategy of appointing more presidential staffers because he cannot appoint more ministers has been widely exposed.

“The president says he has delivered less ministers but his strategy is, if less, then more divide. You have appointed few ministers but more and more presidential staffers and more and more committees,” Afenyo-Markin said after the President’s state of the nation address in Parliament on Thursday February 27.

Afenyo-Markin further told President John Dramani Mahama that at the time that he is complaining about rising youth unemployment, his administration, in less than one hundred days, has sacked a lot of youth who were employed by the previous administration.

He said “he is telling us today that we have 2.2million youths unemployed but what he has forgotten is that in his administration, in less than 100 days all we know is sack them, and dismissals, On the streets of Accra today, the youth of the country are saying Mahama baako termination bebreebeee [To wit: With Just Mahama, we have a lot of termination of appointments].”

During the SONA, President John Dramani Mahama said that youth unemployment is the biggest challenge facing Ghana.

He notes that youth unemployment threatens national security. To that end, he said, he has set up the Ministry of Youth Development to address the concerns of youth unemployment.

The President he said “The youth unemployment has led to despair and frustration. This poses a major security risk to our country and requires urgent attention.”

In other matters, President Mahama urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and their Minority in Parliament not to boycott the upcoming national economic forum as they did during the Senchi Forum.

Delivering his maiden State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, he said he seeks to bring everyone on board to build the country.

“I am confident that the sacrifice we have all made this year will benefit our county going into the future,” he said.

“Together we shall build the Ghana we all want,” he stressed.

The Mahamaa administration had announced the National Economic Dialogue, scheduled for March 3rd and 4th, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

This important gathering will offer a platform for Ghanaians to respond to the pressing economic challenges and forge actionable solutions to foster sustainable economic growth. President Mahama will lead the dialogue with a Keynote Address centred on “Resetting Ghana: Building the Economy We Want Together.”

This initiative represents a crucial step in fulfilling President Mahama’s campaign promise to involve citizens in discussions that shape their economic future. The dialogue will promote consensus and collaboration among participants regarding priority policies and structural reforms.

The outcomes of the forum are expected to begin the journey towards economic revitalisation, ultimately enhancing business opportunities and improving living conditions across the country. It will bring together key stakeholders from the private sector, academia, public policy institutions, and civil society organisations.
