President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The appointment, effective from January 21, 2025, is in accordance with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 13(1) of the Ghana Revenue Act, 2009 (Act 791).
Sarpong’s appointment will be in effect until the governing board of the GRA, in consultation with the Public Services Commission, provides its constitutionally required advice.
This appointment comes after the resignation of Julie Essiam, who stepped down from the position on the same day. Sarpong is expected to lead the GRA during this transitional period and ensure the continued effective functioning of the Authority.
About Anthony Kwasi Sarpong
Anthony Kwasi Sarpong is the Senior Partner of the KPMG Practice in Ghana, where he provides strategic direction and manages operations to achieve key corporate objectives. He has 22 years of experience in audit, accounting advisory, corporate recovery, and insolvency, having worked in Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa.
Before his role as Senior Partner, Sarpong was a Partner and Head of Audit at KPMG Ghana, where he also served as the sector lead for Financial Services and Head of Risk Management. His experience spans consumer markets and financial service lines of business, and he has led complex cross-functional engagements for the firm.
Sarpong is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAG), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), and the Ghana Association of Restructuring and Insolvency Advisors (GARIA). He holds an MSc. in Financial Risk Management from London Metropolitan University, UK; a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Manchester, UK; and a First Class Honours in Business Administration (Accounting option) from the University of Ghana.
