The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Technical Centre in Prampram is currently hosting the fourth edition of the KGL U-17 Championship.
This event brings together the finest under-17 players from all ten Regional Football Associations, competing for top honours in the KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U-17 Colts Championship.
The championship serves as a platform for showcasing emerging players and fostering their development. This U-17 tournament is a key component of the GFA’s broader strategy to identify and nurture young football talent across Ghana.
“Football at this age is to be enjoyed, not necessarily winning. When they play the district and you go on and tell them to play and they would be selected to go and play the regionals, it gives them some motivation. At the same time, any club and any scout, can watch you and come for you, so I think it’s an exposure to the youth,” said KGL Foundation chairman, Nana Oduro Sarfo.
Coaches from the Western Region and Greater Accra Region teams emphasized the value of these championships for both young players and their own coaching careers. They discussed how such tournaments contribute to player development and provide valuable experience for aspiring footballers.
Head coach of the Greater Accra juvenile team, Evans Adjei, shared with 3sports, “I am really very happy, for what I have seen here so far. It was a program that had been in existence for a long time, but it got to a time colt football went off. Luckily with our new administration it has come back.”
His counterpart, Amankwah Cosmos, who represented the Western Region, believes such initiatives greatly benefit young players. “There are so many young talented guys at some of the deprived areas in the nation, that had it not been such competitions can’t come out for people to see them.”
While still in its early stages, this collaborative effort between the GFA and the KGL Foundation shows great promise. It has the potential to pave the way for future football talents in Ghana, creating a sustainable pipeline for the national team and professional clubs.
