Aduana Stars win 2nd Premier League title

Aduana Stars played in the Premier League for the first time in 2009/2010 season

Aduana Stars are Ghana Premier League champions for the second time in eight years with a game to spare after a 2-1 win over Elmina Sharks in Dormaa.

Sam Adams’s late penalty was the defining goal for Aduana after Rashid Alhassan had cancelled out Benjamin Tweneboah’s opener for the visitors, who needed a win to be certain of their top flight status.

The result in Dormaa was enough to give Aduana a second league title in eight years but that plus WAFA’s 1-2 loss at Cape Coast  Ebuasua Dwarfs means they have a seven point advantage going into the final round of league games.

Aduana won their first league title the same season they joined the Ghana Premier League in 2009/2010. And this season, they had to endure a long battle with WAFA for the right to be called champions. In the end, it was determined by the experience of the new champions.

Attention in the league will now turn to the relegation scrap with the destination of the title sorted especially after both Great Olympics and Tema Youth won to take it to the last day.

As many as eight teams could fill those two final spots but it is the likes of Bechem United, Liberty Professionals, AshantiGold, Great Olympics and Tema Youth most at risk.

Great Olympics beat AshantigGold 1-0 in Accra through Christopher Nimley’s goal to give themselves at least one more chance of survival and dragged the four time champion AshGold straight into the final day survival battle.

Tema Youth have another shot at survival thanks to a 2-1 win at home to Bechem United that was secured thanks to Ekow Benson’s late penalty. Bechem United must now win their final game of the season to preserve their top flight status.

Inter Allies are all but guaranteed another season in the top flight after a 2-1 win over Liberty Professionals who have the daunting task now of beating Kumasi Asante Kotoko on the final day to stay up.

Kotoko themselves were 1-0 winners over Berekum Chelsea to stay fourth with Saddick Adams’ goal against his former club. Kotoko will look to hold Wa All Stars for fourth after they beat Bolga All Stars 6-1 with four of those goals from Kweku Asuandzie.

Medeama avoided the relegation scrap on the final day thanks to Francis Addo’s winner against Accra Hearts of Oak who are guaranteed a top three finish.
